The BioMedical Admissions Test, or BMAT, is a test used by medical universities in the UK, Spain, the Netherlands, Thailand and Malaysia to assess your suitability for a medical degree course. It gives you the chance to strengthen your university application by showing your scientific and mathematical aptitude under test conditions, a well as your ability to problem-solve and communicate.

Universities including Brighton and Sussex Medical School, the Imperial College London, Lancaster University, University College London, the University of Cambridge, the University of Manchester Medical School, the University of Leeds, the University of Oxford, and Keele University all require successful completion of the BMAT. Each of these medical universities weighs BMAT scores differently, so it is smart to review how your university of choice will consider the results.

The BMAT is a 2 hour exam, divided into 3 sections:

• The first section, lasting 60 minutes, is dedicated to problem solving, understanding arguments, and data analysis and inference.
• In the second section applicants have 30 minutes to prove their knowledge of scientific and mathematical subjects, and their ability to apply this knowledge in unfamiliar contexts.
• Section 3 doesn’t test knowledge as such, but rather the ability to develop ideas and communicate them in writing. In 30 minutes, participants must choose one of a number of different tasks and construct a written response.

The BMAT is split into two sessions, one in August and one in October. Applicants to the University of Oxford must take the October exam, while for most other universities both dates are an option.

Please inform yourself about which session you should take beforehand, as you may only take the exam once per application season.
